Booking a Rental

8 Questions to Ask Before Renting Soft Play

The questions that separate pros from rookies — and protect your kid's party.

Soft play has a low barrier to entry — anyone can buy a ball pit and rent it out. Most operators are great. Some aren't. These 8 questions tell you which is which.

1. "Are you insured? Can I see the certificate?"

The most important question. Liability insurance ($1M coverage) is standard — costs operators $600-$1,200/year. A real pro emails the certificate in 5 minutes. Hesitation = walk away.

Why it matters: kids on rented equipment + injuries happen. Without insurance, a slip-and-fall claim could come back to you.

2. "How do you sanitize between rentals?"

The right answer: "We wipe everything with [pediatrician-approved cleaner] between every rental. Ball pit balls go through [UV / hot wash / industrial sanitizer]. We also re-sanitize on-site at setup so parents see it." A pro has a written process.

The wrong answer: "Oh, everything's pretty clean." Pass.

3. "What's age-appropriate? My kid is [X]."

Tests their experience. A pro asks the kid's age + suggests the right setup:

A vague "all our setups work for any age" = inexperience.

4. "Do you set up indoor or outdoor? What space do you need?"

A pro can describe space requirements: "10x10 minimum for our standard setup. We need a flat surface, shade if outdoor, and an outlet within 50 ft if you want LED lights or a fan." A vague "we'll figure it out" = inexperience.

5. "Can I see real photos of recent setups?"

A pro has dozens. They'll text 5-10 photos within minutes. Stock images or "I haven't taken pictures" = red flag.

Their Instagram is the test. 50+ posts with real parties = solid. 10 posts and all stock = newer or sloppy.

6. "What's your cancellation + weather policy?"

A pro has a written policy. "50% non-refundable deposit, balance due 7 days out. Weather cancellations get a one-time free reschedule within 6 weeks." Reasonable + clear.

No policy at all = unprofessional. Demanding 100% non-refundable upfront = exploitative.

7. "When do you arrive + how long is setup?"

Right answer: "We arrive 60-90 minutes before party start, setup takes 45-60 minutes. You'll be greeting guests with everything photo-ready." A pro respects your time.

Wrong: "We'll be there 30 min before, depends." Setting up while parents arrive = unprofessional.

8. "What happens if equipment breaks during the party?"

The right answer: "I leave a phone number to text. If something pops or fails, I can be back within 30-45 min for most repairs. If it's unfixable, I refund the rental amount + leave a partial setup that's safe."

The wrong answer: "Won't happen." Stuff happens. The pro has a process.

Bonus: how they answer matters

A pro answers with calm confidence — they've heard these questions before. A panicked, defensive, or annoyed response on basics tells you everything about how they'll handle a problem on party day.
